The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is officially opening a probe on approximately 80,000 MINI Coopers’ power steering components. Should you be concerned?
BMW is actually, it seems, merely “next in line” in the power steering probe business, as Hyundai and Toyota have recently – and more famously – undergone scrutiny by the NHTSA. Evidently they’ve received 54 complaints about power steering problems in the 2004-2005 model year MINI Coopers that could result in more difficult steering and thus a certain lack of control should the power steering fail.
It should be noted that there have not been any reports of crashes related to power steering problems in the MINI Cooper. However, if you have noticed any extra effort required in your steering, check with your MINI Dealer for the latest information. Chances are, if they are under investigation for this kind of thing, a recall will likely be issued and it shouldn’t cost you anything. Check with your Dealer first, of course, but better to err on the side of caution.
