The veritable flotilla of MINI Cooper fighters is sailing into shows like Geneva, armed with big brakes and high-torque turbocharged engines. Should we be scared?
This particular car is rumored to be the new DS3-R from Citroen. (Why can’t Europeans actually name their cars? All those letter and number combinations sound like passwords, not lusty-looking passenger cars!)
Anyway, it seems that Citroen – like just about every other automaker out there – is setting their sites squarely on the MINI Cooper. This one is a 1.6 liter turbocharged four cylinder that looks fast even before you get in. It’s got the glared wheel arches, the low ride height, the big visible brakes behind the look-at-me wheels. And you gotta love the burnt orange accents.
So, should MINI be worried? Certainly, all of these wannabe’s will inevitably shave some market share off the MINI marque, but that which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Hell, it’s been 50 years and they’re all just now catching on?
