Autoevolution.com recently published an article claiming that the MINI Paceman model may not be discontinued as was originally reported earlier in the year. Instead, the Paceman will evolve to become a four-door vehicle that can be produced on existing BMW platforms.
It is believed that the next generation Paceman will borrow a platform from one of the new compact crossover BMW models – either the X1 or X2 – which helps explain why the company would be willing to continue production of a vehicle that has suffered from disappointing sales figures from its inception. Using an existing platform allows the BMW Group reduce production costs for the Paceman, thus keeping it a viable vehicle in the MINI Fleet.
With that said, we aren’t completely sure how much two additional doors will help the Paceman’s consumer appeal. The vehicle still figures to have that distinct rear-sloping roof line – a centerpiece of its unorthodox design. It might be cheaper for BMW to produce, but are people going to suddenly start buying it? Will it cannibalize Countryman sales? Lots of questions, for sure.
