The MINI Countryman is one of the most popular MINI models sold in the U.S., but to date customers looking for a diesel model have been out of luck. This all may change if rumors around the blogosphere are to be believed, with word of diesel Countryman arriving on U.S. shores before the end of the decade.
To be clear, the diesel Countryman has existed abroad for years where diesel vehicles are more widely accepted and enjoy strong sales figures. MINI currently offers its hardtop Cooper model in diesel within the United States in both standard and turbocharged “S” variants. Diesel vehicles are enjoying increased popularity in the U.S. in the face of rising fuel costs. Increased fuel efficiency and cleaner diesel engines have peaked the U.S. consumer base’s interest and it appears that MINI may look to capitalize on this in the future.
