The concept dates back to 2001 but may soon become a reality: a speedster version of the MINI! Too good to be true?
When we first got wind of this, the red flags shot up in cubicles all across the office: “If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.” But then we got to thinking …bringing the original MINI into the 21st Century sounded too good to be true once, didn’t it? And BMW is talking about bringing the MINI Cooper Diesel to the U.S…. and they’ve just updated their uber-fun convertible… so… it’s at least in the realm of possibility, isn’t it?
The MINI Speedster concept calls for two seats (of course) with the requisite twin roll bars behind the headrests and a cloth top (if you must). A hardtop version will also likely be available.
While MINIs aren’t necessarily cheap, it will certainly provide more shiver for the shekel than a high-end ‘Vette or anything from Germany (including BMW’s own Z4) or Italy, and it will still have to fend off models like the little two-seaters from the Orient that are much more price-sensitive. Still, this is a MINI dammit, and although it looks suspiciously like the Audi TT no other car on the road can match its fun quotient. I mean, go ahead and gape: it looks like a good time standing still! Stay tuned… we’ll have more news as news develops.
