When a product becomes popular, other manufacturers try to seize on that popularity by imitating it, as in the MINI and the Lincoln C Concept Car, shown here.
I am not making this up: there is actually a device in the car’s grille that recognizes other Lincoln C’s on the road and “winks” its left headlight at them. And that’s not all…
The top creates a two-tone effect with a stainless steel look (actually painted aluminum).
The roof glass is done up in the Lincoln marquee symbol.
The steering wheel is hubless.
The seats are post-Danish Modern thin.
The doors are done up in “suicide” style.
The stereo speakers are in the headliner.
You get the idea. Lincoln is trying to go after the MINI market by manufacturing “cute” and if the Lincoln C Concept car makes it to production, we’ll see if its drivers will want to wink at one another or not. After all, Lincoln owners have for years been opting to buy the expensive version of a high-zoot Ford because they want that exclusive grille badge. Is this the same buyer who, well let’s just say it, would buy a MINI?
Go ahead and remove the b-pillar. Throw in your weight and height sensing power head restraints. Etch those stark white leather seats with lasered floral patterns. MINI buyers you will never be.
And that is, thankfully, as it should be.
