If you've got an iPhone or a Blackberry - and a MINI - you're no longer alone out there.
Now here's putting technology to good use: Mini USA and Allstate have launched iPhone and Blackberry roadside assistance apps for Mini Cooper owners!
Here's how it works: after downloading and installing the app, you key in your VIN, name, address, and a few other pertinent details. Then, whenever you have a little trouble down the road, you take out your handheld, launch your roadside assistance app, and hit the call button. The app will then send all of the information you input - plus your GPS location! - to a roadside assistance rep. Before you know it, help will be on the way. In fact, you'll even receive their ETA. They'll give you a reference number for your call along with the name of the service provider responding, so no neer-do-wells posing as responders can try to intervene in the meantime. Finally, the app completes its mission with an automated follow-up confirming that everything is OK and went as designed.
It's different from the likes of GM's OnStar and AAA because, well, the app is free, and you can get it on any 2004 (or newer) MINI. You'll need an iPhone OS 2.2.1 (or later) or a Blackberry, although the app for this handheld may still be in the works. Cool, eh?
