The MINI E will become the BMW ActiveE - and then the Megacity - after a second series of real-life driving tests made possible by the first 600 lessees who gave feedback on their MINI E. Are you following this?
BMW has announced that the new test markets for their BMW ActiveE electric vehicle will include all the usual suspects: New York, L.A., San Diego, San Francisco, Boston, etc. The concept these real-life drivers will be driving is based on the BMW 1-Series with BMW’s electric drive train and lithium-ion battery pack. It will have a real-world range of 100 miles and a plug-in time of 4 hours to start up again.
The reason BMW is moving so confidently forward with this project is thanks in large part to the MINI E, which was tested largely on the same roads across the country. Part of that confidence comes from the real-world fact that the first series of test drivers took most of their round trips at less than 30 miles, well within the comfortable cruising range of the EV. The handling and the acceleration are reported to be similar to that of the normal gas-powered 1-Series.
Then, after all of this testing (assuming they’re happy with the results) BMW is prepared to launch the Megacity Vehicle sometime in 2013, no doubt with a MINI E version soon to follow. Stay tuned...
