You’ve got the MINI One Clubman, The MINI Cooper JCW Convertible, and MINI Crossover…but will they be coming here?
Now that the Detroit Auto Show is behind us, the next big show is in Geneva. While it’s still unclear if MINI will shatter expectations as it did – literally – in Detroit with it’s now infamous image of the new MINI Convertible breaking through a wall of ice… they are going to reveal one – and possibly two - new models.
The first is the MINI One Clubman. Note the absence of the Cooper name. While the standard Cooper packs 120 hp, the Cooper S 175 hp and the Cooper Diesel 110 hp, the MINI One Clubman makes do with only 95 hp. It will include such economy-minded touches like regenerative braking and start-stop engine technology however, so it will have the second best fuel economy and emissions figures in the range, behind only the diesel version. That will make it also the least expensive version, but there is no word as yet that it will make it to the States.
The second is the rumored revelation of the John Cooper Works version of the new Convertible, with a more powerful variation of the Cooper S’s turbocharged 1.6 liter engine putting out 211 hp, 17” alloys and big bad Bremco brakes. And, naturally, racing stripes. This will almost certainly make it to the U.S., albeit in limited numbers.
A third new model is the MINI Crossover Concept which, speaking of auto shows, wowed them in Paris and will skip Geneva and debut as a full-on production model in Frankfurt this September. While it won’t have the tricked out rear swing door and side portal featured on the concept version, it will have an optional four-wheel-drive system complete with a low range so drivers can take it off-road if they want (which will basically be, like, never). One thing you can expect, however, is a high price tag. This is a BIG MINI, after all. We can't imagine this one not making it to the U.S., where the market is hungry for both fuel efficiency and all-weather capability. We’ll have to wait and see, though, if the higher ground clearance and beefier frame will inhibit the brand’s trademark go-cart handling…but wouldn’t it be great if it didn't?
