Spy shots of a third-generation MINI Cooper prototype have recently surfaced from Motor Authority, offering glimpses of a future replacement to MINI’s heralded R56 platform.
The MINI Cooper prototype images suggest that that 2013 MINI Cooper will feature a more athletic shape, reminiscent of the Paceman design which debuted earlier this year. A steeper A-pillar and a wider, lower front grille round out the discernible changes to the MINI Cooper exterior. Interior alterations to the 2013 MINI Cooper can be seen in the spy photos, that show a more traditional set of dashboard gauges - a departure from MINI’s distinctive center-mounted speedometer.
The next-gen MINI Cooper will also be featuring a new family of three-cylinder engines, featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology. “TwinPower Turbo Technology features a twin-scroll turbocharging system, direct fuel injection and solenoid injectors, the latter being the latest innovation for BMW’s VALVETRONIC variable valve control system.” The new BMW engine will offer performance and fuel efficiency, while remaining small in size.
The new 2013 MINI Cooper will be unveiled late next year. Stay tuned here for updates.
