It’s no secret that MINI has been planning a pretty drastic makeover for the next generation of its flagship Cooper model, but the latest word from Autocar about a 5-door MINI Cooper is sure to surprise everyone.
It remains unclear whether this 5-door Cooper would replace the Clubman or exist alongside it, though the plan for the Cooper is distinctly different. The MINI Cooper design would scrap the suicide-style rear door of the Countryman and shorten the length of the front doors to make room for two smaller - but conventional - rear doors. This new design aims to keep the MINI Cooper overall length at around 13ft.
Despite new rear doors, the back seats of the Cooper will still be tight, providing enough space for only the smallest of humans. It’s interesting that MINI decided to change the Cooper in a way that arguably compromises its character, for such a negligible increase in size. This move is of course aimed to appeal to a larger consumer base, but is the added space of the 5-door MINI Cooper enough to change the consumers opinion of the vehicle? Only time will tell!
