A user poll conducted by Autocar Magazine, a popular UK automobile publication, has recently named the original Austin Mini Cooper the “Greatest British Car Ever Made” edging out popular models from Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin.
The 1970 Range Rover SUV and the 1961 Jaguar E-Type were apparently no match for the iconic Austin Mini. Making its debut in 1959, the Mini enjoyed tremendous success during its 41 years of production, selling an impressive 5.3 million models. Autocar’s poll was spurred by the recent automotive boom in Great Britain which has seen considerable growth in vehicle manufacturing and exports over recent years (see also: Jaguar Land Rover).
In 2001 Britain’s Austin Mini was relaunched by the BMW Group as simply “MINI,” but the new ownership has gone to great lengths to mold the MINI brand using its original British heritage, styling and history in motorsport. The success of MINI has helped carry on the legacy of the traditional Austin Mini, keeping it topical, relevant, and British.
