Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke earned two quality finishes for the MINI WRC Team at this weekend’s Rally Spain event, finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Kris Meeke was certainly the story of the Rally for the MINI team, posting the fastest time in the event’s final Power Stage, en route to his fifth place finish; Meeke’s first finish in five WRC events. Meeke’s performance has suffered in previous contests due to a series of vehicle malfunctions, and most recently, a crash at Rally France. For Meeke, finishing a WRC event was a victory in itself; landing in the top five was just the icing on the cake.
Kris Meeke:
“That was the perfect end to this rally for me…To be quicker than Dani on the same tires on his home patch is something pretty special. Over the whole rally I don’t have the experience to compete with the other guys yet, but this shows that when I know where we are going we can be with them.”
Dani Sordo has established himself as the premier driver on the WRC Team, and entered Rally Spain on the heels of a second-place finish at Rally France. Sordo’s success in limited WRC appearances this season has raised his expectations for victory, and left him slightly disappointed with a fourth places finish.
Dani Sordo:
“It is okay to be fourth, but we lost a lot on the first day on the gravel stages and with the dust…I am quite okay, but not totally happy as I really wanted to finish on the podium on my home rally, but it didn’t happen this time.”
Sordo finished the Rally less than two minutes behind leader Sebastien Loeb of Citroen, while Meeke came in about 5 minutes off the leader’s pace. The MINI WRC Team will conclude their season at the Wales Rally (Rally Great Britain) November 10th -13th. The Wales Rally Great Britain is the final WRC event of the year.
