MINI has just issued a safety recall affecting about 850 MINI Cooper vehicles for a defect in the front seats.
The recall affects 2015 MINI Cooper 2 door hardtop models manufactured between August 12, 2014 and September 2, 2014. The issue at hand is that during a severe rear-end collision, the adjustment mechanism on the seatback could disengage, allowing the seat to fold. This could result in increased likelihood of injury to the seat occupant.
The defect was first noticed when a loose seatback was discovered at the factory. A subsequent investigation revealed the cause of the problem, a solution was devised, and MINI decided to conduct a voluntary recall to fix any potentially defective seats. MINI dealerships will re-align and retighten the defective mechanisms free of charge.
At the time of this writing, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA) there have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue.
The recall has begun and owners of affected vehicles should be receiving a notice from MINI. Or, they can contact MINI customer service at 866-825-1525. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
It speaks highly of BMW Group and MINI for picking up on this issue and providing for a quick resolution.
