@krismeeke: Ever wonder what it would be like to have the girl you loved tell you she’s leaving you to go work as a prostitute? #MotorsportCanBeDangerous
Kris Meeke’s tweet earlier this morning captures the disappointment and betrayal felt after MINI and Prodrive announced last night that they were dropping Meeke and his co-driver Paul Nagle from the MINI WRC team.
As presumed, financial issues were at the root of the decision. Spaniard Dani Sordo will be retained, and the second MINI spot will be auctioned off before each event and driven by individuals who can finance the vehicle themselves (hence Meeke’s “subtle” prostitute reference). Meeke’s dismissal is believed to have surprised him as much as it did the motorsport community; no wonder considering Meeke still has two years remaining on his Prodrive contract.
MINI Team sources have publicly stated their desire to maintain close ties to Meeke, and it is believed that Meeke will remain close at hand for vehicle testing and development.
It’s hard to feel anything but bad for Kris Meeke, especially after such a strong finish to the 2011 season.
