A New MINI John Cooper Works is now available that takes some of the cute out of the car and replaces it with muscle.
The first thing you notice is how it sounds. Big dual exhaust pipes give it a deep, resonant sound and even offer the occasional backfire burp between shifts. The next thing you notice is how flipping far you’ve just come in only 6 seconds. This little thing is turbocharged!
With 208hp, 192 lb. ft. of torque and a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission, you move pretty quick... yet you still get 25/33 mpg. You stop pretty quickly, too, with what MINI calls “extremely powerful brakes”: big red Brembo calipers with 12.4 inches ventilated discs up front and 11 inches in the rear. You also get a “sport” (read: “stiff”) suspension, 17” run-flat performance tires.
For those who don’t know, John Cooper started racing in England at age 12. (His father built him the car, so he was allowed). In fact, they had so much fun together they developed the Cooper Car Company, which you already know something about. These days, the JCW marque indicates “sport”, much like BMW’s “M” class. And for a little under $30,000, you too can enjoy this kind of athletic prowess.
Look for it coming soon to a dealer near you.
