The MINI Countryman has been commended and criticized for its larger size. Fans love the added space and utility, critics feel the Countryman abandons its “MINI” roots. For the latter, there may be some bad news on the way, as rumblings from BMW are hinting at a size increase for future Countryman models.
The BMW Group feels that a larger Countryman will be better positioned to compete with other small to mid-size SUVs in the United States. It will be interesting to see whether the Countryman’s sales will increase significantly with a larger vehicle. Is the car’s appeal rooted in its style, its utility, or a combination of both? BMW is probably betting on the latter, and feels that the vehicle’s current size (still small for its class) is preventing would-be-buyers from purchasing. But if a larger frame severely compromises the “MINI-ness” of the Countryman, we could see this plan potentially backfiring.
