The next-generation MINI may well sport a new 3-cylinder engine...and they’re even hinting at knocking it down to 2!
Obviously, a 3-cylinder engine will use less fuel than a 4-cylinder. Following that logic, a 2-cylinder engine would use even less. BMW’s Product Development boss Dr. Klaus Draeger hinted to Auto Motor und Sport magazine that 2-cylinder engines may well be the way to go in the future, with 500cc’s and 50-80hp. They’re figuring that is all that is necessary for a fuel-sipping city runabout. This, especially if the company goes forth with plans to make a MINI Minor – an even smaller version of the MINI targeted at just such a city platform – would be the perfect hood under which to plant one of these new test engines.
