For a decade, MINI enthusiasts from across the country have convened around a perilous stretch of highway 129, nestled deep within the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. They call this portion of road The Dragon, and with 318 curves spread across a short 11 miles, speeding through this gauntlet of twists and turns requires the same fortitude required to slay a mythical reptilian beast – or so one might presume.
“MINIs on the Dragon” (as the event is popularly referred to) occurs the first weekend of every May and draws hundreds of MINI drivers for a few days of fun focused around their beloved vehicles. The event features organized meals and activities for attendees to participate in including a car show to showcase the great cars, a “brew swap” to share some beverages and stories, vehicle-related informational sessions and countless other excursions and opportunities to connect with like-minded MINI lovers.
Of course, the main draw of MINIs at the Dragon is the opportunity to hit the Dragon with all of your MINI friends – old and new. There are a variety of free, riding groups that embark on spirited rides at all hours of the day and night: early morning, midday, and the always popular “midnight ride.”
The best part is that proceeds from all of the events activities are donated to Graham County, North Carolina – a tremendous “thank you” for all of the fun provided by the region each year!
A truly great event. For more information please visit their website: http://www.minisonthedragon.com.
