While this photo from our friends at InsideLine appears to be a MINI Cooper S Clubman hybrid, there are those who seriously doubt it.
The automobile world is not immune to the same popular “bandwagon diseases” that infect the sports world (steroids, salary wars, anything LeBron), the celebrity world (paparazzi, tabloid journalism, anything Paris), or pretty much any other “world” you can think of. In automobiles, the current bandwagon disease is centered around one word: hybrid. As in, “we must have one in the line-up.” Chevy turned some of their big SUVs into hybrids. Honda is introducing the hybrid CR-Z. The list goes on and on.
Ergo, this photo of a MINI Cooper S Clubman hybrid.
But it’s no big trick to slap a hybrid decal on the side of a car to get people talking. Or, in the more sinister theories, to distract the tongue-wagging car-watching public from other changes that have nothing to do with hybridizing the Cooper.
So no, we’re not buying into the MINI hybrid thing just yet. In fact, given the (lack of) performance we’ve seen in those other hybrids out there, should MINI even consider the idea? After all, if it ain’t broke…
