Want to trade up to 32 MPG? How about 60 MPG? You may get your wish if MINI can make the grade.
MINI V.P., Jim McDowell, has confirmed that the company is “considering” a diesel for the U.S. market by 2011, or even 2010. (Although he cautioned that the move is “not certain.”)
The MINIs currently being offered in other markets simply would not meet the U.S. clean air requirements, so we are all waiting for the next-generation diesel engine to come out of BMW, which will undoubtedly conform to our standards.
What is particularly exciting about this new development isn’t that American MINI diesel drivers could see the 32 average mpg European drivers are seeing, but with the new Bosch-modified version, they could see upwards of 60 mpg!
If that happens, they won’t be able to import them fast enough!
