The average MINI enthusiast is probably not too familiar with the X-Raid Team; a BMW-sponsored race team that has been dominating the endurance rally scene with the most aggressive MINI Countryman you’ll probably ever see.
The MINI All4 Racing was designed specifically for the X-Raid Team’s endurance rally competitions by the MINI Design Team and Magna Steyr, a global, brand-independent engineering and manufacturing partner. X-Raid introduced the MINI All4 Racing in January’s Dakar Rally and began expanding its presence in competition throughout 2011. The MINI experienced tremendous success in its first year of racing, notching top-ten finishes in four separate events. The highlight of the year came after the MINI All4 Racing won the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge in the United Arab Emirates in April. What’s more, the X-Raid team has announced that the MINI All4 Racing will replace the BMW X3 CC for future endurance rally events.

For those unfamiliar, an endurance rally is an off-road racing competition that spans hundreds of miles, and often, several days, hence the “endurance” nomenclature. Endurance Rally’s tend to be grueling affairs, taking place in some of the world’s most unfriendly climates (Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Abu Dhabi and Morocco to name a few). The endurance rally “courses” do not feature boundaries or trail markers; rather, the responsibility is on the driving team to reach each checkpoint.
To race in an endurance rally – and to do so successfully – requires an experienced driving team and a world class rally car. Fortunately, the X-Raid Team has access to both, as it boasts some of the most accomplished drivers in the field, and the competition’s hottest new vehicle.
The X-Raid Team is managed (and presumably financed) by Sven Quandt, son of Herbert Quandt, former majority shareholder of BMW.
