MINI marketing ploys continue to amaze us. The latest promotion features 2012 Olympic long jump hopeful J.J. Jegede leaping over three MINI Coopers. Photos and video after the jump.
England’s long jump champion J.J. Jegede is no stranger to competition stress, but this MINI stunt offered a unique element of risk given the elevated platforms he was jumping from.
Said a spokesperson from MINI:
“The three MINIs when lined up measured approximately six meters in length, a successful jump by a world-class athlete in optimum conditions is seven to eight meters, so Jegede, with no safety-net and under pressure to perform in extraordinary circumstances had very little margin for error.”
Taking place beside the River Thames, featuring an English athlete jumping over three MINIs with the London Bridge as backdrop, the MINI jump doubled-down on British iconography to grand effect. The jump has helped create buzz for the MINI Cooper London 2012 Edition, a MINI created in honor of the 2012 Olympic Games which will be hosted in London this summer. The MINI jump also offers some publicity to one of the country’s Olympic hopefuls.
J.J. Jegede on the jump:
“When you watch athletics on TV it’s hard to really understand just how far professional athletes can jump,” said Jegede. “I’ve always wanted to demonstrate my ability in a fun way, so I jumped at the chance to perform an Evel Knievel-style display. It is my ultimate dream to compete at London 2012. I spend much of my spare time working with young people to get them involved in sport too, but I certainly advise any budding athletes not to try this one at home.”
