MINI has spent the last 10 years carving out a niche as a unique, quirky car rooted in motorsport and committed to the driving experience. It comes as little surprise that even their diesel offerings –touted for their fuel efficiency and clean emissions– are formally recognized as “fun.”
The MINI Cooper D was recently named “Fun Green Car” of the year at What Car? Magazine’s 2011 Green Awards. The MINI Cooper D will reach 60 mph in 9.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 121 mph. While these numbers are respectable, the Cooper D’s considerable torque make the car “feel” faster (re: fun) than the stats might suggest. To think, all this fun at almost 80 mpg!
“The Mini 1.6D Cooper proves that being green does not mean you have to wave goodbye to driving enjoyment,” noted Chris Hallett, What Car? Magazine’s Editor in Chief. “It has very low running costs, because it emits just 99g/km of CO2 and does 74.3mpg. The Cooper D is without question the most fun way to go green and keep a bit more cash in your pocket.”
For those needing more performance from their diesel, theCooper SD sprints to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds behind 143 hp and 225 ft-lbs (!) of torque.
Currently, the MINI Diesels are not available in the U.S., though rumors suggest we may see them stateside in the coming year.
