MINI has started to manufacture vehicles in India, following suit with several other prominent automotive makers looking to capitalize on one of the world’s fastest growing emerging markets.
MINI’s manufacturing plant is located in Chennai, India, a location which will provide a foothold for the brand in the years to come. As it currently stands, MINI is only producing MINI Countryman and MINI Countryman D variants, believing that the four-door sport crossover will be a strong seller in Asia. There are plans to slowly roll out MINI Cooper hatchbacks as well. Current vehicle sales are modest, but projected to grow with demand in the coming years.
The move to manufacture in India was a conclusion the BMW Group came to while considering the country’s 100% duty on imported car. That figure drops to only 30% for vehicles manufactured within India. The decision to manufacture cars in India and thus, avoid additional cost has also been made by luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover.
