An illegally imported imported Mini Cooper was literally torn to shreds last week in a publicity video released by the US Customs and Border Patrol.
CBP agents declared the vehicle’s VIN number was fraudulent and that the vehicle was less than 25 years old, making it illegal for importation into the United States.
The vehicle was reportedly a left-hand drive built around 2000, yet was listed on the shipping documents as a 1988, and the 1988 VIN was for a right hand drive car.
CBP has apparently ramped up inspections of imported Minis, along with those of imported Land Rover Defenders. Land Rover fans will recall that a Defender was destroyed in a similar video back in 2013.
US officials say this increased scrutiny is part of “Operation Atlantic,” a partnership with customs and regulatory officials in the UK, dedicated to preventing the illegal importation of vehicles. Rest assured, if you try to import a vehicle that isn’t compliant with the letter of the law, it will likely be seized.
If you are planning to import any vehicle, familiarize yourself with the laws and make absolutely certain the car is 100% original and that it is exactly what the seller says it is.
Or, save yourself the hassle and buy one that was made for the US market.
