If BMW board member Peter Schwarzenbauer has it his way, we will. In a conversation with Autocar, Schwarzenbauer expressed a desire to reduce the size of the current MINI model lineup down to “four or five hero cars.”
While it’s too soon to jump to any drastic conclusions, the fact that a board member is going public with these statements could indicate that some change is on the horizon for MINI. Of course, those current on MINI news affairs are well aware that efforts to consolidate the lineup are already underway. MINI announced in the late summer of 2013 that it would be discontinuing the MINI Roadster and Coupe; two experimental models which never really gained any traction in global markets. More recently, MINI announced the discontinuation of the MINI Clubman with the 2014 model year.
Schwarzenbauer’s statements have the blogosphere abuzz, but it seems that these plans have been underway for a while. We’re interested to see how it all shakes out.
