Motoringfile has reported new information on the future of MINI’s vehicle lineup, including the company’s plans to increase the size of the flagship MINI Cooper hardtop model.
The MINI community has not been thrilled with the steadily increasing size of their beloved vehicles, but MINI and the BMW Group have some pretty compelling reasons to make the Cooper bigger and it all comes down to dollars and cents. By making the Cooper larger, BMW Group will be moving the car to the C-segment of automobiles (think VW GTI), where there are plans for a variety of BMW derivative vehicles. Again, it’s all about economies of scales – sharing platforms across model lines helps reduce production costs and increase profitability.
Hopefully this move will help pave the way for the smaller city cars that MINI has teased in the past – namely the MINI Rocketman. While a larger Cooper may prove more profitable for the company, a smaller, on-brand city car would presumably sell very well too. It’s just a matter of how much it would cost to produce.
