The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Saturday that it will be investigating MINI Cooper S vehicles following twelve separate reports of engine fires.
The NHTSA began their preliminary investigation on October 11th. A recall may be ordered depending on the probe’s findings. The fires are believed to originate in the engine compartment, making all “S” model Cooper, Clubman and Convertible vehicles potentially susceptible to catching fire.
The probe will look into over 36,000 MINI Cooper S vehicles produced in model years 2007 and 2008. Federal investigators handling the probe said, “complaints show an apparent increasing trend with most complaints received within the past year.” Five of the twelve reported fires completely destroyed the MINIs and eight of the vehicles caught flame after the car had been shut off.
No injuries have yet to be recorded from MINI car fires.
