We've spent a great deal of time on this blog reporting MINI's plans for the consolidation of their vehicle lineup. A recent interview with head of MINI brand management Oliver Friedmann suggests that the MINI Paceman may be the next vehicle model to be discontinued in the relatively near future.
It’s been widely accepted for some time now that the MINI Roadster and MINI Coupe will soon be phased out, which was more or less confirmed again by Friedmann in his interview with Auto News when he said the models were probably, “not a priority.” A phaseout of the Paceman was not explicitly outlined in the interview, but MINI’s plans for moving forward with three flagship “hero” vehicles doesn’t seem to leave much room for the quirky two door.
MINI plans to move forward with a MINI Cooper hatchback model, the new MINI Clubman, and a larger, SUV-inspired MINI Countryman. Reducing the lineup to three models and three chassis is a clear move by MINI to increase profits by improving economies of scale. Fewer variants means more streamlined production and reduced production costs. Of course, there will be several variant models (think, MINI Convertible as a variant of the Hatchback), meaning there could be hope for the Paceman, but seeing as how MIN plans to increase the size of the Countryman, this does not seem likely.
