Sources indicate that MINI has plans to introduce a diesel version of the MINI Clubman in the year 2017. Better yet, it is rumored that these diesel vehicles will reach US shores.
It is believed that the Clubman will draw on the high-performance power plants currently found in the MINI lineup, likely resulting in both Cooper D and Cooper SD models. Existing Cooper SD engines enjoy 143 hp and 225 ft-lbs of torque, though new iterations could see horsepower in the SD models climbing towards the 190 hp figure found in current Cooper S petrol vehicles.
The challenge with bringing diesel vehicles to the United States centers around the ability for manufacturers to develop a system that meets a stricter set of emissions standards. Engines are currently being tested with the goal of developing a power plant that will provide a sufficient level performance while meeting US standards. Given the new found popularity of diesel engines stateside, not to mention their improved fuel economy, it would seem advantageous for MINI to bring such a vehicle to the U.S. market.
