The MINI was a big hit in Detroit at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. We’ve gotten hold of the speech given there by Stefan Krause, Board Member of BMW AG, and he had some very positive things to say:

First the Clubman…Now A MINI Cooper SUV?

First there were the rumors and now the spy photos confirm that apparently the engineers over at BMW believe in all things all wheel drive. Car Magazine has snapped a spy photo of what appears to be a MINI 4x4 SUV which, knowing BMW’s hyper-active marketing department, would be termed a Sports Activity Vehicle if it ever got loose. This MINI SAV is certainly no Land Rover, but it’s taller than the Clubman, longer, at 13 feet, and features an all-wheel-drivetrain, probably borrowed from the BMW X3.

First, if you want a truly international car, step right up. The new British-based MINI is going to feature an engine from the combined resources of German-based BMW and French-based Peugeot. Either way, BMW will be showcasing a station wagon version of the new MINI and retro-labeling it after the popular Traveller and Clubman wagons of the 60’s. This version will be 200 mm longer than the current MINI and is only one of a broader range of body styles derived from the second-generation MINI Cooper, which will likely include a 3-door hatchback and a new version of the convertible.
