Recent statements from MINI Design Chief Anders Warming indicate that MINI is strongly considering the viability of adding a smaller, city car to the vehicle lineup. Warming’s comments offer little in the way of detail, but confirmation that MINI is at least considering a small car should please enthusiasts.
“For sure, a MINI should always be a small car, so [a new city car] would be appropriate for the brand,” notes Warming. “At the moment, we don’t have the right tech solutions, but we are working on it. We don’t have a final solution you could say.”
There is a natural inclination to speculate about the future of the MINI Rocketman, a small, city car prototype that received significant fan fare at auto shows a few years ago. MINI scrapped the Rocketman from its production plans despite a generally positive reception, but it appears the model’s popularity was not lost on MINI’s senior team.
We would personally love to see the Rocketman (or a Rocketman derivative) join the MINI stable. Seeing MINI go “smaller” with new vehicle designs would be a welcomed change.
