Mini Lovers Kenya, like all vintage car clubs, are the keepers of their chosen marque and hold a special place in their hearts for all aspects of their vehicles, for better or for worse.
In Kenya, Minis from the 60's and 70's were once fairly numerous, having been imported by British nationals who made Kenya their homes. Many of those people have left, and many of the cars haven't survived, but they are becoming an increasingly common sight again thanks to this new Mini enthusiasts club, started in 2012.
It can be difficult anywhere to keep old cars on the road, due to poor condition of long-abandoned vehicles, and difficulty in securing spare parts. In Kenya, these problems are exacerbated by distance and the rough conditions of Kenya's roads. When the Kenyan Mini Lovers do get an old Mini back on the road, then there is the incredible traffic to contend with. Says one club member, "we don't take out our classic Minis every day but only on special occasions."
But, make no mistake. These Mini lovers do use their cars, and they like to take them on trips, often driving up to 100 kilometers across the savannah to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Check out Mini Space and the Mini Lovers Facebook page for more information and photos of some neat vintage Minis either finished or undergoing restoration or out and about enjoying the Kenyan countryside.
